Brighthouse Compensation – All you need to know

You may have heard on the news recently that Brighthouse has been ordered by the FCA (Financial Conduct Authority) to repay £14.8 million to around 249k customers.
I’ve been reading through some of the comments on my Facebook Group and other forums and it would appear that many people are wrongly speculating on who is to be in receipt of the compensation so I am here to set this straight.

Who will be eligible for the refund?

As per the Brighthouse official statement, customers who find themselves matching the criteria below may be eligible for the repayment.
1) Customers who took out an agreement with BrightHouse between April 2010 and April 2017 and then either cancelled the agreement within the 14 day cooling off period, or did not take delivery of the goods, and did not receive a refund of any payments made. In these cases, we will refund all payments made under the agreement.

2) Customers who took out an agreement between April 2014 and September 2016 and where we have identified that our checks may not have effectively ensured that customers could afford the repayments. Where customers returned the product to BrightHouse, we will refund the interest and any fees paid under the agreement.

How do I apply for the repayment?

Again, people have already started to pick up the phone and send emails and letters. Please, do not panic.
Brighthouse will be contacting customers both current and previous before the end of the year if they are eligible for the refund. If your details have changed and you feel that they may not be able to get hold of you then you can contact them and provide them with your details. This process may take longer than some people are expecting so it would be worth keeping that in mind.
